What is a

GRAPHIC DESIGN PROCESS

Although some people may think good graphic designer just simply putting words and images on a page or designing a logo, it entails much more than that. There’s a lot more to make this process effective and smooth. As long as everything flows smoothly, a graphic team will produce designs faster and more efficiently.

There are many steps involved in any visual project. But the exact process depends on the graphic design service and may vary greatly from one project to another. In order to create great graphic design, you and the designer will need to have your own unique creative process. The graphic designer process checklist we created is based on our graphic design services and experience. You can always rely on this guide to keep a project’s momentum or even to get it started if you get stuck.

All projects begin with a creative brief that establishes the overall tone. A good visual design begins with the ideation process, which leads to the creation of a design that meets the requirements. It is arguably the most important step in the process.

Creative briefs help graphic designers understand the scope of the project and what is expected of them. To reduce any confusion, it’s best to include as much relevant information as possible.

Your design brief should include the following:

  • Details about the company
  • Guidelines for project
  • The target audience
  • Identify the brand’s problem, if any
  • What the final designs should be for (web design, brochure, menu, a product label etc.)
  • Project timeline and milestones
  • Budget
  • How do you intend for customers to react to the final graphic design?
  • A list of similar designs you like or dislike

The second step of the graphic design process does not actually involve any designing, but it is no less important. After receiving the brief and knowing what you need, the graphic designer will conduct market research. The goal of this step of the process is to gather as much information as possible to inform the graphic design. This includes the direction of design will take and all future decisions related to the project.

This information could include the company’s background, what you do, and your past designs. It may be a competitor’s brand, design that you are interested in or your target audience and what they do. In general, it could be what is currently performing well in the industry. We will conduct market research to determine what the final design should or should not look like.

To minimize the time spent on this step, you should include as much valuable information as possible in your creative brief. Research is important to build a better understanding of the audience we are designing for and how to make it work best.

As part of the research phase of the design process, we will need to do the following:

  • Analyze competitor designs
  • Observe how the intended audience is engaging with social media channels
  • Take all the knowledge we’ve gained and apply it to our current project

Design brainstorming begins with deciding how we will approach the design brief. In other words, we will need to decide what we will actually design. During brainstorming, ideas are spontaneously generated as we will write down how to creatively solve a problem we have been given.

It is much easier to come up with ideas if we work together, as the more of us there are, the more ideas we can come up with. We will not go to come up with brilliant ideas every time, but that’s the whole point of brainstorming.

For optimal clarity, it’s best for the project owner to add any relevant designs or inspiration to the brainstorming if you have strong ideas about how the final designs should look.

After the graphic designer has developed 3-5 ideas from the brainstorming and ideation phase, we will choose one to move forward with. The result will be a smooth workflow process that gives you the best results in a short amount of time.

Idea generation is the next step in the design process, following brainstorming. In this step, design actually starts to look like design. The thumbnailing process can be used to visualize what our ideas might look like once we have sorted through them. As a result of brainstorming and thumbnailing, it should be clear what’s going to work and what’s not. The next step will be to select what will be most effective in fulfilling your expectations.

Using initial research and idea generation, we will narrow down all options to one standout concept. It is important that the final concept effectively communicates what your brief requested. Additionally, the concept should be able to differentiate itself from what is currently available on the market. A compelling concept should be unique, memorable, tailored to the client’s needs, and appropriate for the target audience.

In this step, the design starts to resemble what will eventually be presented to you. We will build your designs based on the concept selected and the thumbnails created. We will refine all designs into something that can be presented to you, creating something that you will love. To ensure that you are satisfied with the design, we will continue to tweak and refine it until you believe it has reached the mark you have set for it.

All appropriate software or tools will be used for the project. Adobe Creative Cloud programs, such as InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator, could be used for this purpose. It might be a digital design program like Sketch or, depending on the project, a more analogue tool like a paintbrush. We will use the best method to translate your ideas into actual designs.

As you determine your milestones in your creative brief, be sure to communicate with your graphic designers throughout the development process. Using the 10/50/99 feedback process ensures that you are checking in at the most critical points of a project, allowing you to provide the most appropriate feedback at the right time.

  • 10% complete – A skeleton, outline or wireframe of the final design has been developed. You may provide feedback at this stage regarding the work’s vision and direction.
  • 50% of the work has been completed – The core components are beginning to take shape. Rather than debating the direction, focus on whether or not your vision is being realized in the design.
  • We are 99% done – Now it is time to fine-tune things such as spacing, sizing, colours, and other design elements. It is essential to review the final adjustments continually.

During this stage of the design process, we will present to you what we have created. In either a video call or an in-person meeting, we will present what we have created while explaining why we created it. To better understand why the design looks the way it does, we will go over the last eight steps, explaining our choices at each point. You will be able to give your feedback and thoughts on what we have designed and how you think the final design should look.

Our graphic design team will do its best to take your advice into account, but we will also explain why some of your wishes may not work. Our goal is for you to say Yes! We love it! A saying that is magical to the ears of our graphic designers. After you are satisfied with the final design, it is time to stop fiddling and realize that the design is perfect as it stands, even though that infamous designer perfectionist inside us will be tempted to make small changes.

When we receive your feedback, we will head back to the graphic design studio and respond as best as we can. You may even want to jump back all the way to the brainstorming step and have another brainstorm about how your wishes may fit into our existing design. In this way, we may better understand how to please you without having to make fundamental changes to the design that you already like. We will remain flexible and ensure that both sides are satisfied with the outcome.

Once revisions have been made, once or more, and all the other steps are finished, we will present the final design to you. Your creatives are finalised, approved and packaged.

The design is complete. It’s time to get the final files and put the designs into action. It is now time to begin the actual production process. Depending on the service is, the production process will vary significantly.

Understanding

GRAPHIC DESIGN

The purpose of graphics is to transmit messages through visual content. Designers use typography and pictures in interactive designs to optimize user experience by applying visual hierarchy and page layout techniques. Images, colour, and typography are used by graphic designers to attract customers.

However, the finest graphic designers must justify stylistic choices based on user experience. In other words, you must create good-looking yet usable designs with specific users in mind.

While working in the digital age requires you to use interactive software, a graphics still follows old principles. Getting your customer’s attention from the very first glance is essential. Therefore, graphic design corresponds to emotional design.

Graphic designers should understand colour theory and how crucial it is to choose the right colour scheme. In addition to reflecting the organization, colour choices must also reflect the expectations of the users. It is also important to think about how to shape users’ emotions as they move from, for example, a landing page toward a call to action.

With user psychology in mind, it’s important to stay focused on some very important factors when it comes to graphic design.
